Private Whisky Casks - 1837®

A unique opportunity

Become the owner of your very own private whisky cask of Single Malt Scotch Whisky distilled at The Borders Distillery in Hawick – the first Scotch Whisky distillery in the Scottish Borders since 1837.

The distillery’s Directors have released 1,837 whisky casks for private sale at a price of £2,400 per cask.

Filled on a date of the owner’s choosing, in a cask type selected from a range of options, each individually numbered cask is stored under bond and bottled when the owner wishes.

A private cask of Scotch Whisky

Is there a particular date on which you would like to fill your whisky cask? Perhaps you want to mark a special occasion – a birthday or anniversary? Let us know, with as much notice as possible.

Once filled, your cask will be warehoused by The Borders Distillery. The first ten years of warehousing and insurance are included in the purchase price.

1837® owners are granted access to a specially-commissioned app, allowing you to monitor the development of your cask, tracking the flavour profile as your spirit slowly matures.

Your very own Single Malt bottling

We recommend bottling after at least 10 years of maturation, although you may choose to leave your cask of whisky to mature for longer.

When the time is right, we will arrange bottling for you. A selection of bottles and labelling options are included in the purchase price.

The final number of bottles will vary from cask to cask, and by bottling strength, but a reasonable estimate at 10 years old and 46% ABV might be 260-280 70cl bottles.

Upon bottling, and prior to release from bond, the cask owner will be liable for Duty and VAT according to the rates and laws in place at date of bottling.

Choosing Your Cask

You can request the date upon which you wish your cask to be filled. Give us as much notice as possible and we shall endeavour to fill on your requested date.

You can choose to fill your Whisky into one of five different cask types, all carefully selected by our whisky-makers to complement the fresh orchard fruits character of our New Make Spirit.

Your chosen cask will be filled with New Make Spirit at 63.5% alcohol by volume. Exact capacity varies by cask, but we will always seek to fill to the cask’s full potential – typically 190-200 litres.

Once filled, your private cask of single malt whisky will be warehoused by The Borders Distillery and managed by us on your behalf. The first ten years of warehousing and insurance are included in the purchase price.

Cask Type & Strength

When, and if, you choose to bottle your cask, you will have the option to pick your whisky strength. Whisky’s come out of their casks at varying strengths depending on age of the liquid and the relationship the spirit has with the wood.

Bottling can be at any strength from 40% alcohol by volume, up to cask strength, which after 8 years we would expect to be between 53% and 60% ABV. The distillery will help you with whatever strength you choose to bottle at, providing support and advice if needed.

The Borders Distillery offers 5 different signature cask types. To find out more about which type of whisky cask is right for you, call us at 01450 374330 and a member of our team will be happy to chat to you!

Following Your Cask

You will be invited to download the 1837® Private Cask App (available for iOS and Android). Once logged in, you can track the evolution of your spirit as it matures.

Each year we will update the flavour profile of your whisky cask and show how your spirit is developing through a proprietary ‘spidergram’ developed by our whisky-making team.

Please contact us if you have any questions regarding the 1837® Private Cask App.

YOUR VERY OWN BOTTLES OF SINGLE MALT

We recommend bottling only after your Whisky has spent at least 8 years maturing in its cask, although you may choose to leave your Whisky to mature for longer.

Once a date is agreed, we will arrange bottling for you, using our standard packaging materials and a personalised label. If you would prefer, you can choose your own labels, boxes, closures, and shipping cases to suit your requirements, and we will advise of incremental costs incurred beyond our standard packaging offer.

The final number of bottles will vary from cask to cask, and by bottling strength, but a reasonable estimate at 8 years would be a yield of 280-300 (70cl) bottles at 46% ABV.

A lifetime of support

When you buy a cask of whisky at The Borders Distillery, you also sign up for a lifetime of support from our team. We will take care of everything- from paperwork, to secure cask storage, to bottling- you can trust us to handle the tricky bits.

As a permanent member of the TBD family, you will have access to bespoke newsletters and exclusive discounts. Further, we look forward to welcoming you for your complimentary tour of the distillery, so you can see exactly how your whisky was made.

Important Information

Both Duty and VAT are payable after bottling when they are released into the UK from the bonded warehouse, and are the responsibility of the cask owner.

At the time of writing, cask purchases for personal use are not subject to the tax on Capital Gains levied in the UK.

If there is a requirement to export, please note that the Scotch Whisky Regulations 2009 state that Single Malt Scotch Whisky may only be exported from Scotland in bottles.

It is important to note that in the view of HMRC, the cask purchaser is responsible for being aware of all regulations, duties, and taxes prevailing in their country of residence or domicile relating to the importation of alcohol. You can read them in full here.

In June 2020, the Scotch Whisky Association developed independent advice and information for people considering the purchase of a cask of Scotch Whisky. We recommend anyone considering such a purchase read the SWA’s advice here.
